Rock's original riot girl shows the new kids how it's done. Are you listening, Courtney Love?
For poet, painter, artist and playwright Patti Smith, rock and roll has always been just another canvas on which to lay bare the contradictory elements of her complex personality. On landmark albums like "Horses" and "Easter," those roles--punk priestess, spoken-word performer, jaded flower child, lover--come together in a swirling kaleidoscope of emotions and ideas. Unafraid to display her unvarnished rough edges (as when she inhabits the role of Salome on "Lo and Beholden" from the latest "Gung Ho" or geeks out as a gushy guest on Conan O'Brien), Smith earns points for her unflinching honesty as well as for pushing the rock and roll envelope.
