"More than a teacher and cultural ambassador representing Continental cultural history, she is a confrontational entertainer and heir to the political cabaret tradition of Weimar-era Germany. Where sensibility and feelings come first for American cabaret singers, Ms. Lemper doesn't perform anything that isn't propelled by an idea." - The New York Times
German-born cabaret legend Ute Lemper's performing career grows out of a passionate and enduring commitment to art, politics and history, and out of a contentious and complicated relationship with her homeland and its past. Her panache, versatility and sophisticated repertoire - including Berlin cabaret songs and the dark gems of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill - have led her to international acclaim as a recording artist, and in the theatre, cabaret and film worlds. Tonight’s journey leads through the French song world from Ferre, Piaf to Prevert and Brel and continues to the backstreets of Berlin , where ancient ghosts with new faces write poetry and songs between yesterday and tomorrow. (Songs by Hollaender/ Weill/ Brecht/ Lemper/ Waits and Mitchell).
